This month The Boxties make their mainstage debut at the Cremorne Theatre in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, with our show Bound Away to Leave You, on November 25 and 26.
It’s based on songs by Sting, from his musical The Last Ship, written as a tribute to the place he grew up, a shipbuilding town in North East England.
There are some really subtle and beautiful tunes; humorous, rambunctious, folky numbers, ballads, a bit of rock’n’roll and cabaret and tango-tinged songs. We’re not performing The Last Ship in its original form; what we’ve done is take some of the themes from the musical, and tried to create something more impressionistic, interweaving a few other traditional tunes that explore some of the bigger ideas alluded to in the original show - of ships and the sea, of love and loss.
We’ve been working on it for a while, and the more we delve into this striking and sophisticated music, the more depths it reveals to us.
It’s totally exciting for us to be involved in this collaboration with QPAC, and to have the opportunity to reach a wider audience. We’re also very lucky to be working with lighting maestro David Walters, who’s helping us on the production side.
Ticket sales are already looking quite healthy, to our delight, so if you’d like to hear what we’ve been doing recently, check out the QPAC website for bookings here.
